The Cavaliers have dealt 25-year old point guard Ramon Sessions and 22-year old small forward Christian Eyenga to the Los Angeles Lakers for 31-year old small forward Luke Walton, 31-year old SG/SF Jason Kapono and the Lakers first round pick in the 2012 NBA Draft unless it’s in the top 14 (which it won’t). Sessions played in 41 games (4 starts) for the Cavaliers this year and he averaged 24.5 minutes, 10.5 points, 3.1 rebounds and 5.2 assists per game. He played in 122 games (42 starts) in his two years with the Cavs and he averaged 25.7 minutes, 12.3 points, 3.1 rebounds and 5.2 assists per game. Sessions was likely going to leave the Cavaliers over the summer as he was likely to decline his player option for the 2012-13 season. Daniel Gibson will likely pick up minutes behind Kyrie Irving as the backup point guard going forward. Christian Eyenga played in 6 games (0 starts) for the Cavs this year and he averaged 13.8 minutes, 1.5 points, 2.0 rebounds and 0.7 assists per game. Eyenga played in 50 games (18 starts) in his first two years with the Cavs and he averaged 20.6 minutes, 6.2 points, 2.7 rebounds and 0.8 assists per game.
It’s unclear to me as to what plans the Cavs have for Kapono and Walton. Kapono played in 27 games (0 starts) for the Lakers this year and he averaged 10.0 minutes, 2.0 points, 0.5 rebounds and 0.4 assists per game. He has now played in 509 games (87 starts) in his first 9 years in the NBA and he is averaging 17.8 minutes, 6.7 points, 1.7 rebounds and 0.8 assists per game. Kapono is a good long range shooter as he has nailed 43.4% of his shots from three point range in his NBA career. Kapono was a 2nd round pick of the Cavaliers back in 2003. He played in 41 games (3 starts) in 2003-04 for the Cavs and he averaged 10.4 minutes, 3.5 points, 1.3 rebounds and 0.3 assists per game while shooting a stunning 47.7% from three point range. Luke Walton played in 9 games (0 starts) for the Lakers this year and he averaged 7.2 minutes, 1.3 points, 1.6 rebounds and 0.6 assists per game. Walton has now played in 493 games (138 starts) in his first 9 years in the NBA and he is averaging 17.3 minutes, 4.9 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game. The Cavaliers main objective was to get a 1st round pick for Ramon Sessions. Anything positive that Kapono or Walton does the rest of the season will be icing on top of the cake for the Cavs.
UPDATE: (3/17/2012) – The Cavaliers have bought out Jason Kapono.
