Cleveland Cavaliers’ front office and fans are getting a tad nervous

Blogged under General, Bloglockers, Big Cavaliers News, Front Page by alleyoop on Wednesday 30 June 2010 at 11:07 am

The Cavaliers have to be nervous right now as LeBron James becomes a free agent tonight at midnight. The Cavaliers have told every team in the league that they are unwilling to work a sign and trade for James. That means that the Cavs can pay him the most money in salary. If James comes back the Cavaliers will try to work a sign and trade deal with another team to bring in a big time #2 guy to team with him. That is likely the only way that the Cavs can bring in a big time talent to help him because they are over the salary cap already. I think that if James leaves the Cavaliers will get really aggressive in the trade market. I think they would try to pry Carmelo Anthony away from the Nuggets in a sign and trade. The Cavs also have Mo Williams and Delonte West on the trading block right now. I would trade Williams right now to the Blazers if they gave the Cavs back Andre Miller and one of their young big guys. If LeBron James stays look for the Cavs to try to sign Mike Miller who would be a solid sidekick at shooting guard. It will be an interesting summer in Cleveland but rest assured owner Dan Gilbert won’t sit on his hands if James leaves as he would lose a lot of money by putting a poor team on the court.

The Cleveland Cavaliers could buy or trade their way into the NBA Draft tomorrow night

Blogged under General, The Draft Report, Bloglockers, Front Page by alleyoop on Wednesday 23 June 2010 at 2:13 pm

Rumors are flying in Cleveland that the Cavaliers are going to get into the first round tomorrow night by hook or crook. A lot of teams have their first round picks for sale and I fully expect the Cavs to try to buy one to select a big man. Guards Mo Williams and Delonte West are both on the trading block and rumors out of Portland have the Blazers very interest in Williams. I wonder if Andre Miller would be coming back in that kind of trade? If so I would make it as Miller was one of the best players the Cavs ever have had and he is a class act. I expect the Cavs to be busy tomorrow night despite not having a draft pick right now.

Danny Ferry resigns as GM of the Cleveland Cavaliers

Blogged under Comings & Goings, General, Bloglockers, Big Cavaliers News, Front Page by alleyoop on Friday 4 June 2010 at 5:46 pm

Danny Ferry has decided to resign as the GM of the Cleveland Cavaliers after five years on the job. His contract was going to up at the end of this month anyway. Ferry couldn’t get together with owner Dan Gilbert on an extension plus he couldn’t have been too happy with the firing of Mike Brown who he handpicked for the head coaching job five years ago. The Cavaliers were 272-138 (66.3%) under Ferry’s watch which is pretty impressive. Chris Grant takes over as the Cavs’ GM after serving the last few years under Danny Ferry as his assistant. Grant will be under a lot of pressure to win a NBA Championship and to do that he will need to convince LeBron James to return to Cleveland. I don’t think James liked Ferry much so this move might have been made thinking that it will give the Cavs a better chance of retaining him.

Anderson Varejao is always a key to how well the Cleveland Cavaliers play

Blogged under General, Bloglockers, Steppin Up, Front Page by alleyoop on Thursday 3 June 2010 at 7:43 pm

27-year old power forward/center Anderson Varejao always seems to play with a passion for basketball that rubs off on his teammates. He is one of the most unselfish players in the league as he would rather dive for a ball, grab a rebound or set a pick than score. He played in 76 games (7 starts) for the Cavs last year and he averaged 28.5 minutes, 8.6 points, 7.6 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game. Those are not bad numbers for a backup player. He has now played in 388 games (72 starts) in his six years with the Cavs and he has averaged 24.1 minutes, 7.0 points, 6.7 rebounds and 0.9 assists per game. Varejao is likely #2 in the hearts of Cavs’ fans behind LeBron James and he isn’t going anywhere.

The Cleveland Cavaliers are shopping Delonte West

Blogged under General, Bloglockers, Big Cavaliers News, Front Page by alleyoop on Monday 31 May 2010 at 5:37 pm

The Cavaliers are actively shopping 26-year old SG/PG Delonte West. He will make $4.6 million bucks for the 2010-11 season unless he is cut but August 5th in which he would only get $500,000 bucks. West played in 60 games (3 starts) for the Cavs last season and he averaged 25.0 minutes, 8.8 points, 2.8 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game. He has now played in 150 games (93 starts) in his three years with the Cavs and he is averaging 29.8 minutes, 10.3 points, 3.1 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.2 steals per game. The Cavaliers likely won’t get much back for West as he could be facing a suspension for acting like the Terminator last summer. The Cavaliers are also looking to buy a draft pick in this June’s NBA Draft.
