Shooting Guards

The Cavs have really built up their depth behind Larry Hughes, but they hope Hughes will stay healthy and productive. Hughes gives the Cavs a legit #2 scorer and an elite defensive guard, but he missed more than 1/2 of last season with a broken finger. Most of Hughes offense is on drives to the basket and he doesn’t have 3-point range. Hughes has averaged 15.2 points, 4.7 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.6 steals per game over his career.

The Cavs signed veteran guard David Wesley to back-up Hughes. Wesley is a good shooter and decent passer, who will extend the opponents defense as he hits 37.0% of his 3-pointers. Wesley has career averages of 12.9 points, 2.6 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.4 steals per game.

Sasha Pavlovic is a good player, but he’s buried on the bench for the Cavs. Pavlovic is a good shooter and is very athletic. For his career, Pavlovic has averaged 4.8 points, 1.6 rebounds and 0.7 assists per game.

The Cavs first round pick of this season, Shannon Brown could have a hard time getting off of the bench because of the Cavs very deep roster.

Point Guards

The Cavs have veterans at the point guard position that don’t demand shots, which is good for them because the Cavs have enough scorers. Eric Snow will start again this season, but he’s just brings the ball up the court on offense, and plays good defense. Snow has only averaged 7.3 points in his career, which was mostly played with sidekick Allen Iverson. Snow is a decent shooter (42.7%), but his range doesn’t extend beyond the 3-point line. Snow does all of the little things that veterans know how to do to help win a game. He makes his free-throws (77.5%), dishes out assists (5.2 per game) and has averaged 1.2 steals per game for his career.

Damon Jones is the likely #2 point guard this season. Jones is a gunner, plain and simple. He likes to call himself “The Best Shooter on the Planet”. While that is not true, he has hit 38.6% of his three pointers for his career. The problem with him is that he’s content to just stand out by the 3-point line and wait for someone to throw him the ball. Jones has only averaged 6.8 points per game for his career and 3.1 assists. It seems often like he’s allergic to the key, almost like someone really fouled him hard a few times when he was young. He also can be abused by any big point guard that posts him up by the basket.

Second round pick Daniel Gibson is a player that the Cavs really like, but they probably will bring him along slowly as the Cavs are built to win now!

Mike Brown

Mike Brown did a very good job as a rookie coach in the NBA. It’s tough for a young coach to succeed right of the bat with a team with huge expectations. Brown helped lead the Cavs one game from the Eastern Conference Finals, and had the Pistons down 3-2….before the veteran savvy Pistons won the last two games. Brown had a 50-32 record during the regular season, and should do much better if Larry Hughes stays healthy.

Brown has a career playoff record of 7-6.
